What is the difference between polyurea and polyurethane coatings?
Polyurea forms via reaction of isocyanate with amine, making it moisture-insensitive and extremely fast-curing (gel time under 5 seconds). Polyurethane reacts isocyanate with hydroxyl and is slower curing but offers better UV stability and aesthetic finish. Hybrids combine properties of both.
How long does a polyurea polymer coating last?
When properly applied, high-quality polyurea polymer coatings have a documented service life of 20 to 30+ years. Factors affecting longevity include surface preparation quality, coating thickness, UV exposure, and abrasion load. Many infrastructure applications specify polyurea for 50-year design life.
What equipment is needed to apply spray polyurea?
Pure polyurea requires heated, proportioned plural-component spray equipment (typically Graco Reactor or Gusmer equipment) capable of heating components to 150-165°F and maintaining precise 1:1 mix ratios at pressures of 2,000+ PSI. Hybrids may be applied with lower-pressure systems.
How does spray foam insulation compare to fiberglass batts?
Spray polyurethane foam outperforms fiberglass batts in every measurable metric: R-value per inch (7.0 vs 3.2), air sealing (SPF seals 100% vs batts that leave gaps), moisture resistance, structural contribution, and long-term performance. SPF systems reduce energy bills by 30-40% compared to batt insulation.
